Orthodontic Emergencies & Self-Care Guide

At our Smile Studio, we understand that orthodontic emergencies can be distressing, but rest assured, such instances are uncommon. Should you face any orthodontic concerns that cause severe discomfort or encounter an appliance issue you cannot resolve independently, we are here to assist you promptly. Contacting our office immediately is vital for us to address and rectify your concerns efficiently, ensuring your orthodontic treatment continues smoothly.

Temporary Self-Solutions

While emergencies are rare, there are instances where you might find an effective temporary solution before your appointment. Here’s how you can manage some common issues:

  • Loose Components: Any loose parts should be carefully removed and stored in a plastic bag or envelope to bring to your next visit.
  • Brace Discomfort: For braces causing irritation, applying soft dental wax to the protruding part can offer immediate relief.
  • Wire Issues: If a wire has shifted, cautiously use needle-nosed pliers to guide it back into place, ensuring it sits securely in the tube on the back tooth.

In any of these situations, addressing your discomfort is just the first step. It remains crucial to contact us to schedule an appointment for a permanent fix to avoid any potential delays in your treatment plan.

Managing Soreness and Discomfort

  • General Soreness: After getting braces, you might experience some soreness or tenderness when biting. We recommend a soft diet during this time. A warm salt-water mouthwash can help soothe irritated gums and other areas.
  • Over-The-Counter Medication: If needed, Acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) can be taken for severe tenderness. Note that medications like Aspirin and Ibuprofen may affect the movement of your teeth during treatment.
  • Irritation from Braces: It's common for lips, cheeks, and tongue to need time to adjust to braces. Dental wax can significantly reduce this irritation, and we’re here to show you the best way to use it!

Specific Appliance Issues

  • Loose Appliance: Apply wax for temporary relief if any part of your appliance causes discomfort.
  • Loose Brackets or Bands: Should they remain attached to the wire, keep them as is, applying wax if necessary. If detachable, safely store them to bring to us at your next appointment.
  • Wire Adjustments: You can attempt to reposition wires with tweezers or pliers gently. If discomfort persists, clipping the wire with a fingernail clipper may be a last resort – remember to apply wax to any sharp ends.
