What is the difference between an Orthodontist and a Dentist?

Hi! I’m Dr. Caley Höediono. I have noticed some confusion people have between orthodontists and dentists; and I’m here to offer clarity from an orthodontist’s viewpoint.

Let’s first consider the role of a dentist: They serve as your first line of defense in maintaining overall oral health by performing routine dental check-ups, cleanings, fillings, and minor procedures such as fillings. Dentists play an indispensable role in maintaining overall oral wellness; from preventing cavities and gum disease to keeping teeth looking their best!

Now let’s move onto the role of an orthodontist – that would be me! Orthodontists specialize in aligning teeth and jaws. Whereas dentists generally offer general services, orthodontists undergo additional training and education to specialize in straightening teeth, fixing bites, and creating beautiful smiles.

So what differentiates us? Below are a few key differences:

Education and Training: Orthodontists such as myself have completed numerous years of advanced orthodontic training after graduating dental school, specifically devoted to diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Through our education in orthodontics, we specialize in offering care using braces, Invisalign or any other orthodontic appliance available today.

Specialization in Orthodontic Treatments: While dentists specialize in various dental procedures, orthodontists specialize solely in orthodontic treatments – straightening teeth, correcting bites, aligning jaws to create stunning yet functional smiles. Orthodontists possess the specialized knowledge and expertise required for successful results when it comes to overcrowded teeth, closing gaps between teeth, misaligning jaws, or realigning an unbalanced bite.

Orthodontists offer an array of advanced treatment options tailored specifically to each patient. Ranging from traditional metal braces to Invisalign clear aligners, we possess all the tools and techniques required for straightening teeth effectively and discreetly. In addition to using cutting edge digital imaging and 3D modeling technologies to plan out precise treatment plans.

At our office the top priority is creating an enjoyable experience for our patients, especially our youngest ones. First-time visits may be intimidating, so we work closely with parents and guardians to make the visit as stress-free as possible. Our aim is to earn our patients’ trust while building long-lasting relationships that we hope last a lifetime.

Life-Changing Transformations:

One of the greatest joys of my job is witnessing how orthodontic treatment can change lives for the better. From helping a teenager prepare for prom or job interviews to making a bride-to-be feel confident on their wedding day, seeing these transformations inspires me to provide the highest standard of care to each patient that enters my practice.

While both dentists and orthodontists play key roles in maintaining oral health, orthodontists specialize in straightening teeth and correcting bites. With extensive training, specialized expertise, and a focus on creating beautiful yet functional smiles, orthodontists like me are here to help you realize the smile of your dreams!

Are you ready to transform your smile? Book an appointment today- I look forward to assisting with creating healthier and brighter smiles!
